Burna Boy simply stormed the music industry and penetrated the international market within 6 months and it was the slickest move of all time.
And boom! Grammy awards nomination and it was looking sure because of the speed he has moved with. Nigerians were like 95% sure that the award was coming home this time after decades of Nigerians being nominated.
Because it seems like the world was opening up to the adoption of Afrobeat when he got nominated within 2 years after his explosive entry into the industry.
The story now is, he lost the award to the legend, Angelique Kidjo who has won the award twice before then. And some quarters are relieved, some Nigerian artist would have felt slapped across the face, having to be consistent in the game more than he was.
The supremacy fight between South Africans and Nigerians would have been won solely from the music sector, even with the Album nominated was titled “African Giant”.
Deep down, it is a mixed feeling because Nigerians cannot categorize him as the best artist the country has produced in his genre of music. For a musician who adopted Afrobeat from the legend himself ‘Fela’ whose children; Femi and Seun are actively in the same genre of music and has been equally nominated for the same category, it seems unrealistic Burna Boy will do better than the source of the music itself.
