Seun Kuti’s Assault on Police: No Case?

Seun Kuti/Mind of Lady Margaret

Seun Kuti is being scapegoated by the Nigerian police for publicly assaulting a police officer in Lagos, Nigeria and is being remanded at a police station after court grants bail to the defendant who claimed the assault came because the police officer aimed to kill him and his family while on the express way.

Afrobeat Singer Seen Slapping A Police Officer

As Nigerians we’ve seen it too many times before where the police have killed people simply because they did not stop while they were waved down or prove stubborn during road search and the height of punishment has not been to kill such police officers in return, but arrest them, demote them or transfer them to other states.

It is therefore understandable, under the given circumstances that an affluent in the society will do what he/she must to protect himself/herself from the indiscipline and low-value for life and property being displayed by the Nigerian police force over the years in the country.

Since Seun Kuti’s arrest on Monday, the police have raided his house for God knows what, probably assault weapon? They have begged the court to leave him in their custody and grant him no bail for 21 days. They have also charged him to the magistrate court without informing his lawyers, certain media outlets reports his wife’s phone was seized and the police has gone as far as asking those who witnessed the assault to come forward to corroborate their stories.

And based on all the effort the police are making to keep the Afrobeat singer behind bars, it seems Seun’s evidence against them is quite damning and needs to brace against it with their own substantial evidence against the singer. All in all, it seems they don’t have enough to put him behind bars, but knowing the system, even if he walks free this time, they will be a hawk watching him till they have something against him.
