At an ongoing Africa Oil Week Conference in South Africa. The United States Energy Secretary disclosed that his country will be supply Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and South Africa with power energy because it is essential for the development of the continent.
In the year 2015, investigation showed that Nigeria was the 60th largest goods trading partner with United States at $ 5.3 billion in total. He went further to explain that the United States will be the major energy importer to exporters in the world and that is a trademark for United States’ foreign policy moving on.
The United States Energy Secretary explained that the purpose to achieve with the development, is to enhance development in the continent. “We talked about a lot of opportunities – LNG, coal, but it all goes to the issue of power and power being able to be delivered into places that don’t take electricity for granted.” he said.
Perry stated that the idea to help African nations with power energy was against United States former policy of serving as energy importer to becoming a major exporter to Africa. Which in a way to boost the Trump administration.
According to an anonymous source, the Secretary had these to say “The United States wants to be partners with Nigeria, South Africa and throughout the continent.
“American LNG is going out to the world. Projects by Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and Exxon to convert gas discoveries in Mozambique to LNG are welcome even as the U.S. seeks to boost its own shipments, according to Perry.”
This is a good development for Nigeria and a turn from capitalist control with companies such as Dangote Group which has shown interest in supplying power energy to Nigerians. But from all indications, both parties are out for profit and we will still need our government to come through for us on issues where power energy supply is concerned.
