The Nigerian presidential election is fast approaching and the leading candidates; Peter Obi, Ahmed Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar have all started their campaign and election strategies in terms of ‘Manifestos’. But the Obedient, as Peter Obi supporters often call themselves, are making the most noise.
Despite the told stories of Peter Obi’s shortcomings in regard to corruption and not being a favourite in the northern part of the country that holds the highest number of seats in the legislative arm of government, the Obedients are not considering all of these and that begs the question; Is he a sentimental choice? Since the majority of his supporters are Igbos and some South westerners.
Is the support for him all about the eastern people trying to vote their own into office or it is because he has the merits to govern a country? What will be the state of insecurity if Peter Obi assumes office, since the insurgence is northern related, one will wonder how they intend to react to an eastern leader. We saw all their atrocities under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
But in all fairness, none of the leading presidential candidates are selected out of their corruption record since records of corruption have been reported against them all. But in comparison to others, Peter Obi was said to have invested the state government fund while serving as the governor of Anambra State and owned shares personally with the Nigerian Brewery, to establish a private company for himself. The Pandora leaked article exposed him as one of Nigerian leaders to have stored up wealth in foreign countries. He has neither come out to deny or admit these allegations critically.
Nigerians chose Buhari out of sentiments to boycott the continuation of Goodluck Jonathan in office after allegations of corruption against him {Goodluck Jonathan} and now, Nigerians lament that choice every day. Is the Peter Obi movement another mistake in view?
