It is no longer news that Nigerian citizens have begun to express discomfort over the events in the country recently, which has been built up for years. Recently, the government has increased the electricity tariff and petrol pump price and everything went sideways since then.
The protests began with COVID-19 just clearing from the airwaves and the increase in tariff does not seem like the news Nigerians are willing to shrug their shoulders at. Part of the groans is the killings by terrorists in the north and SARS in the south now seems a little too much, with herdsmen playing the role of a cleanser on any community who does not like them to rare cows.
Unfortunately, the Buhari-led administration seems not to have any solution to any problems and the rumour of corruption and abuse of power on the part of the executives, looms the country.
Now, the youths on Twitter are leading a protest against the harassment of the SARS officers and asking for the agency to be scrapped, but the unseen issue is what agency will be the next predator? Who says the army will not pick up guns to roam the streets? Or the VIOs, FRSC, or LASMA?
Do we resolve to fight the issue as it comes or attending to the issue from the root? The government needs to sit-up, or nothing will look good from here on and there is no guarantee the citizens are willing and ready to condone the passiveness of the government till 2023.
Vivid demonstrations already hinting at the East going republic and the South is beginning to think it might not be a bad idea. But all that still seems like short-term solutions, the lasting solution whether the creation of republics or not, good leadership is what is needed at this point.
