Norther lovers showed the first man in Nigeria a surprising welcome ovation at the International airport, Kano, during his visit to the state on wednesday. President Muhammadu Buhari was showered with love by supporters during his visit to commission some projects in Kano. These project features an ultra-modern Specialist Hospital, Giginyu, named after him; a Pediatric Hospital located on Zoo Road, Kano; and the underpass bridge at Madobi/Panshekara Junction.
In a form of return gesture, Buhari reportedly freed 500 prisoners on Wednesday afternoon when he visited the Kurmawa Central Prison in Kano and he claims the exercise is in line with the quest to decongest prisons in Nigeria. Especially for inmates with minor offence, to go home after serving some time in the prison. An exercise that is yet to kick off in other regions of the country and neither was the exercise reported to have gone through due process through which such inmates should be freed.
The president did not wrap up the visit without visiting the Emir of Kano who he said has supported his administration from the start.
“I am overwhelmed by the sea of people I see,” Mr. Buhari said of the mammoth crowd that came to welcome him. “And by what I see today, if elections are contested I will no doubt win it. I know Kano people are aware of the tremendous job we did on security and agriculture.” Buhari said at the Emir’s palace.
Daily, we see the trace of tribalism, but it is early to conclude this exercise will not extend to other regions and we hope in the same spirit, prisoners held without proper trial charges will also be allowed to go including those accused of looting government fund and has no concrete evidence to hold them in custody.
