Couple of months ago, the Army Chief, Tukur Bruatai claimed the army killed 1,429 Boko Haram terrorists and Nigerians began to believe an end has come to the terrorist group in Nigeria, but before the government and the people can bask in the glory of victory, they struck again.
The terrorist group has killed 69 in Borno state and burnt Faduma Koloram village of Gubio local government in Borno state to the ground, the army official on ground in the village detailed that the attack on the village was because the villagers revealed information of the terrorists’ hide outs to the army.
It is no longer news that the terrorist group has chapters to monitor its operations, which has been traced to the ISIS down to ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province) which oversees the affairs of Boko Haram and other Islamic groups in West Africa.
According to reports gathered from eyewitnesses during the attack, the terrorists killed, razed and stole cows and camels totaled to 1,200 with just motobikes. The reality of this is a little hard to believe, but if indeed it is true, then the group might be more formidable than anyone can imagine.
Boko Haram might just be a small fish to fry in the fight against terrorism, because with the operative structures in place, it is easy to recruit new members and restructure a chapter, but hitting the head of the operation such as ISIS or ISWAP (for West African nations) and fishing out sponsors is what is needed to bring an end to the Islamic group terrorists.
At this point, the nations need to work together on this, individual nations fighting the Islamic terrorist group will not suffice. But the idea of the UN and ECOWAS coming together to address the issue is paramount. As the world is fighting racism and controlling diseases, the fight against terrorism should also be top of the list.
