NCAA hosted the Division 1 women’s college basketball final between Louisiana State University (LSU) and Iowa Women’s Basketball team two days ago, but a much talked about “you don’t see me’ hand gesture by LSU Forward Angel Reese at Iowa women Guard and this has sent the basketball world into a frenzy in the media.
The NCAA D1 Women Basketball tournament takes place every spring between March and April amongst 68 women team in the United States and this year, LSU has won the tournament with the highest score in the history of the competition with a 102-85 score in their favour against Iowa Women Basketball team.
The media narrative after the game concerning Angel Reese gesture shares opinion of Reese doing too much on the gesture, while some think Catilin was the one that brought the gesture into the game this year and labelled as bias for those who think Reese did anything wrong.
In response to the backlash against her, Reese posted on her Instagram page;
“All year, I was critiqued for who I was. I don’t fit the narrative,” Reese said. “I don’t fit the box that y’all want me to be in. I’m too hood. I’m too ghetto. Y’all told me that all year. But when other people do it, and y’all don’t say nothing. “So this is for the girls that look like me. For those that want to speak up for what they believe in. It’s unapologetically you. And that’s what I did it for tonight. It was bigger than me tonight. And Twitter is going to go into a rage every time. “And I’m happy. I feel like I’ve helped grow women’s basketball this year. (…) I’m looking forward to celebrating and then next season.”
The First Lady of The United States, Jill Biden has invited the tournament runner up, Iowa Women’s team to the White House despite the history of inviting only the championship winners.
The first lady in her statement said; “I know we’ll have the champions come to the White House, we always do. So, we hope LSU will come,” she said while speaking at the Colorado state capital in Denver. “But, you know, I’m going to tell Joe [Biden] I think Iowa should come, too, because they played such a good game.”
Angel Reese has classified the First Lady’s statement as ‘a joke’ and said “We ain’t coming’.
